Man Utd Edge Out Man City In Thriller At Wembley

Sir Alex Ferguson has always tried to manage expectation by playing down the importance of the Community Shield but the first 25 minutes suggested his players were taking this game very seriously as they were dominant and left the Manchester City players chasing shadows.
Manchester United's slick passing and movement off the ball was was met by a somewhat physical response from the City defence that resulted in a number of early bookings.
However, for all Uniteds early dominance they failed to create any clear cut chances with City providing a dogged rearguard resistance.
In the 35th minute Mancini made an astute tactical decision by moving Milner from centre midfield out to the right wing.
Milners impact was immediate and he started to torment Evra who gave away a free kick for a late foul on the City winger.
David Silva stepped up and delivered a perfectly flighted free kick into the United box where Lescott out muscled the United defence to glance a header into the back of the net from 6 yards.
After the re-start Milner again was a thorn in Evras side with the French defender hauling the City winger to the ground just outside the box resulting in a yellow card for the United player.
Just before half time Dzeko came deep to receive the ball in space and he advanced unchallenged until he unleashed a vicious drive from 30 yards out.
Although the ball was struck with power the United keeper failed to get down quickly enough to his right and the net was bulging much to De Gea's embarassment.
Goals change games and with City going into half time with a 2 goal advantage the blue half of Manchester was delirious in its celebrations.
Sir Alex wielded both the axe and the hair dryer at half time and he opted for the youthful exuberance of Cleverly, Jones and Evans replacing the experienced Vidic, Ferdinand and Carrick.
On paper this looked a weakened United team but the reality was completely different as United tore into the City back line with wave after wave of attacking movement.
On 52 minutes Young delivered a fantastic free kick into the City box that eluded the head of Kompany and Smalling was on hand to guide the ball into the net with a controlled side foot volley from the 6 yard line.
Uniteds dominance continued and in the 58th minute Cleverly, Rooney and Nani were all involved in the best move of the game that put Nani through who made no mistake in beating Joe Hart.
Rooney was instrumental in Uniteds comeback as he dropped deeper to receive the ball and his industrious work rate combined with his intelligent positional play was causing City all manner of problems.
City then came back into the game and the last 30 minutes was more even with both teams pressing for the winner.
In the 88th minute Dzeko had a chance but rushed his shot and De Gea made an easy save while at the other end Nani had a shot blocked after good work down the right by Smalling.
In the 92nd minute after Dzeko fluffed a headed attempt on goal United broke and when Kompany miss-timed his challenge on Nani the Portugeuse wing wizard was clean through and he skilfully rounded Joe Hart to win the Community Shield for Manchester United.
This Community Shield match had an extra edge with both Manchester footballing giants looking to gain a pschological advantage for the forthcoming season in this competitive derby match.
Manchester United looked very sharp and their fitness appeared far superior to their so called 'noisy neighbours' Manchester City.
