Chilis Trio
Enduring a shopping spree with my wife in Gurney Plaza shopping mall is not my idea of a fun filled afternoon, so to placate me she offered to buy me dinner in the restaurant of my choice.
We entered Chili's Restaurant mid afternoon during the quiet period between lunch and dinner and I was confident of a good choice of restaurant as there were more customers here than in any of the other restaurants in this enclave of popular Penang eateries.
Chili's Grill And Bar is a Texas South Western (Tex/Mex) themed restaurant that is brightly decorated with many colourful pictures adorning its walls and this chain of eateries has built its reputation on the quality of its grilled burgers, steaks and buffalo wings.
I understood the portions are quite large here so we decided to share the Skillet Queso for a starter, a wise move.
The chilli sauce tasted ok but the rich cheesy taste of the dip was the real star of this appetizer as it had an essence of a mature cheese with small pieces of beef running through it, it was quite scrumptious.
For our main meals we ordered the South Western Grilled Lamb and the Fajita Trio.
Many restaurants serve lamb cuts of low quality that consist more of fat than meat, thankfully Chilli's grilled lamb was not in that category as it was lean meat with hardly any fat running through it.
If you give me a piece of grilled lamb like this you will put a gastronomic smile as broad as the Penang bridge on my face.
The grilled lamb was accompanied by mashed potatoes made just like they should be from real potatoes, none of that imitation out of a packet manufactured rubbish you get served in a rival global brand restaurant that will remain nameless. Chili's mashed potato really is finger licking good!
The fresh vegetables served tasted like they were steamed, they were not over cooked, thus they retained more of their healthy nutrients which is a big plus for me. The carbohydrate count increased further with the slice of garlic bread cut from a french roll.
I chose the Fajita Trio as I felt the notion of tasting Chili's grilled steak, chicken and prawns in one dish was too hard to resist.
The grilled steak slices tasted good, again this steak was taken from a good cut of meat as there was none of those irritating pieces of fat running through it.
I could taste the lime and garlic in the spicy garlic and lime grilled prawns, they were presented ready to eat without the need to tear the shell off and they left quite a pleasant taste on my palate.
When grilled, onions and peppers are two of my favourite vegetables so I was happy to see these savoury veggies grilled to perfection in the fajita trio.
The Fajita Trio came with some uninspiring dips consisting of guacamole (an avocado based dip), pico de gallo (tomato, onion and chili based) and sour cream. On the same plate was a bed of lettuce covered in smatterings of cheese that enhanced the dips when mixed together.
My wife chose to imbibe Chili's aptly named Pina Chilada, this was a creamy pineapple flavoured drink and despite being full from the food she showed no mercy and quaffed the lot, yes she would highly recommend this drink, but not to the calorie counters.
I made a fairly boring choice of drinking the black tea, yes I know, but I am a great tea drinker. There is not a lot to say about a cup of black tea other than I would have preferred it if there was more choice on the menu, a nice green tea would definitely not go amiss.
We both left this restaurant with bloated bellies after gorging on this wonderful food. There was however one blemish on the service we received in this restaurant; The menu clearly states that all Fajitas' are served with Tortillas, as you can see from my photos these did not arrive.

It is not a mitigating factor but what we did eat was very good and I'm unsure if I would have had the capacity to munch my way through another calorie intensive item of the menu. However, this is the reason I gave this restaurant a 3.5 star rating and not a 4 star rating.
So, clutching an armful of plastic bags we strolled past the restaurants in Gurney Place and after studying a few menus I opted to eat at Chili's Restaurant.
Grilled Lamb Mashed Potato Vegetables
Skillet Queso
South Western Grilled Lamb
Chicken Prawns
Pina Chilada
The large plate of warm Tostado Chips came with a chilli sauce and a very tasty Cheese dip that was still bubbling when it arrived at our table.
The South Western Grilled Lamb was cooked well done and it was served with fresh vegetables, mashed potatoes and garlic toast.
This dish must have been removed from the flamed grill only seconds before as it was still smoking and sizzling when it arrived at our table so creating an aura of culinary drama designed to heighten the gastronomic experience of themed dining.
I'm unsure what the chicken was marinated in as it was fairly bland with the effects of it being flame grilled adding the only taste diversion to the actual chicken meat.
