Interview With Local Penang Artist Julius Saw, Defining His Art

Whilst frequenting my favourite Penang live music venue I met two young Penang Artists who had been commissioned to paint a mural on the wall of this establishment.

Spy.My - What inspires and gives you hope in the world?

Julius - I would like to dedicate this answer to a person rather than an object or feelings, He is my grandfather that passed away 3 years ago. He taught me a lot and helped me mature, he was also an artist but never so famous. Our house has all his paintings hanging on the walls, he was a good painter. My family all say that his artistic talent is hereditary, so I want to use this talent he give me to live a better tomorrow in this world.

Spy.My - How would you describe your style of art?

Julius - I would describe my style as comic/cartoon art.
Spy.My - When and how did you first discover you had an artistic talent?

Julius - When in primary school, I joined with a group of friends that were converting video games to paper drawing games (Because in primary we not allowed to bring any games to school), so in the recess time we drew the Marvel & CAPCON super heroes and even Pokemon to play inside pieces of papers from one level to another level like a Mario game.
In that time we each drew over 5pcs of superhero art or more on A4 paper everyday. Doing this got me interested in art, then I started entering competitions that were published in magazines. The first time I got an award for my art was a colouring competition in a Kids Magazine. After that in secondary I started to draw football player portraits and send to a drawing section of a sport magazine, and I got them published a few times in that magazine as well.
Spy.My - What is your favourite medium to work with?

Julius - I don't have any favourite medium to work with, to me all of them are equal.
Spy.My - What famous artists especially Penang artists have inspired you?

Julius - Mr.Maizul, one of my art lecturers in College. He also has been listed in Penang Young Artist previously. He taught me a lot of art and how to be an artist/designer, he shared a lot of his experience with me, he encouraged me to join many art competitions which in turn helped me grow in confidence as an artist.
Spy.My - As an up and coming Penang artist what do you aspire to be in the art world?

Julius - I hope I can share my art with the public, like having my artwork published or exhibited in an art exhibition. I would like to be a famous Penang Artist.
Spy.My - What is it that inspires you to paint a particular subject?

Julius - Mostly from the things that happen around me, they give me ideas to create my art. Sometimes ideas just spring from my own imagination and I wonder how did I think of that?
Spy.My - Could you tell us more about your previous art work?

Julius - For my previous artwork, I would say I liked to use dark colours for my designs. Sometimes I would create the design just for my own satisfaction, one of my favorite pieces was titled 'Freedom' and it was from my college days.
The medium I used was a marker pen, I drew a man feeling so relaxed with the calculator, clock and key ring in the sky to convey the message he was free from money, time and lifes restrictions.
Spy.My - What brought my attention to your art was seeing the work in progress of the wall mural you had been commissioned to create for the Penang nightclub Queens Bistro, can you explain a little about the process involved in creating this body of work?
Julius - This is the largest art project I have worked on as previous to this any artwork this big that I was involved in was always carried out by a big team. Getting our design approved by the customer was the first hurdle we had to cross, we offer 3 different designs and they chose the one they liked.
During the process we made some minor mistake on the mural as well, but we kept our cool and did not panic until we resolved the situation and the customer was very happy, I learnt to be patient so that's the way to make perfect artwork.
Spy.My - As the Queens mural was a collaboration can you explain how your work demonstrates the communication process between two artists?

Julius - We communicated with each other and divided the work according to our artistic strengths. Stefany is more into fine detailed art so she was doing the text and small images, I was looking at the technical side of the layout (the big picture), so I covered the larger part of the design.
Spy.My - Have you worked on an art collaboration together before?

Julius - I and Stefany? Yes, we did, it was an Art Theatre project where I was the Stage Manager & Actor and she was the Prompter of the Project.

They were really friendly guys so I enquired if they would be interested in me conducting a interview with them for this website, they agreed so here is the result of my audience with Penang Artist Julius Saw (aged 23 from Butterworth) and read here my interview with fellow Penang artist Stefany Ting.
Spy.My - Just how do two fellow Penang artists meet, was it in art school and did you have similarities in your art at the time?

Julius - Yeah, in College, we studied the same course, and I am her senior.
Spy.My - What inspires you to create art and how do you keep motivated if you get a mental block or the going gets tough?

Julius - I recite this quotation from a former team leader: "never give up easily, everyone has to face the hardest part in their life when young, only then can success be achieved"
Spy.My - Where do you see yourself in 10 years time?

Julius - I have no idea about that, but I do believe one day I will see my name in the press with or as a Famous Penang Designer/Artist.
Spy.My - Is your spare time dedicated to honing your artistic talents?

Julius - Movies, Stefany love movies very much, we will visit the cinema at least once a week. Watching movies I get real inspiration for my art from the dressing, colours, sets and so on.
Spy.My - What do you do for fun in your spare time apart from art?

Julius - Everything about football, I play football with my friends. When at home I'm on the internet searching for football news, especially Manchester United.
Spy.My - What is your favourite work of art you have created so far?

Julius - The one I mentioned in one of the previous questions, but, I do have one more; Its title is: 'Colors of Life' and here is the link & full description: http://chinesejulius.wordpress.com/2009/11/24/colors-of-life/
