Interview With Local Penang Artist Stefany Ting, Her Fine Art Revealed
They were really friendly guys so I enquired if they would be interested in me conducting a interview with them for this website, they agreed so here is the result of my audience with Penang Artist Stefany Ting (aged 22 from Butterworth) and read here my interview with fellow Penang artist Julius Saw.
Spy.My - How would you describe your style of art?
Spy.My - What is your favourite medium to work with?
Stefany - I enjoy using acrylics, it dries quickly which may or may not help depending on what you want. There is almost no smell and its easy to clean your brushes as water is used. The challenge of doing an acrylics painting also makes it satisfying. But depends on what the subject is.
Spy.My - When and how did you first discover you had an artistic talent?
Stefany - I didn't really discover that I had an artistic talent. I was just interested in nice and unique graphics that attracted my eye when I was in secondary school, after that I decided to take a course related to design. I learned my artistic techniques from KDU college for 3 years and I worked hard to get to my current skill level and I'm still working to improve.
Spy.My - What famous artists especially Penang artists have inspired you?
Stefany - Without doubt Mr.Maizul who was one of my art lecturers in KDU College. He was also listed in Penang Young Artist previously. He taught me a lot of art and how to be an artist/designer, his experience was crucial to helping me improve as an artist.
Stefany - I hope all of my artwork can spread so it can be seen globally and I would like to see my artwork published or in an art exhibition.
Spy.My - What is it that inspires you to paint a particular subject?
Stefany - For me art is everything and everywhere, so that the things happen around my environment give me a lot of ideas to create inspired art. I remember I heard an artist tell his audience in his personal art exhibition that sometimes our dreams also can be a kind of art.
Spy.My - Could you tell us more about your previous art work?
Stefany - My previous artwork is more towards illustration style, it consists mostly of my previous college assignment and some artwork I designed when I had spare time.
Spy.My - What brought my attention to your art was seeing the work in progress of the wall mural you had been commissioned to create for the Penang nightclub Queens Bistro, can you explain a little about the process involved in creating this body of work?
Stefany - First I have to say we are proud that we had been commissioned to create the wall mural for the Penang nightclub Queens Bistro. This is the first time I handle a big project with just two of us (Julius & me), previously I always work in a big team for doing such project, I learnt a lot on this project like how to calculate the medium and times.
Spy.My - As the Queens mural was a collaboration can you explain how your work demonstrates the communication process between two artists?
Stefany - We communicate very well actually, we are both prepared to take responsibility and work together on shared tasks. It is very important for teamwork when there is only the two of us on a project this big. After discussing how to bring our art to life we worked to our artistic strengths when deciding who would paint each portion of the design.
Spy.My - Have you worked on an art collaboration together before?
Stefany - Yes, we did, it was an Art Theatre project where Julius was the Stage Manager & Actor and I was the Prompter of the Project.
Spy.My - Just how do two fellow Penang artists meet, was it in art school and did you have similarities in your art at the time?
Stefany - Ya, in KDU College, we study the same course, and Julius is my super senior. hahahaha
Spy.My - What inspires you to create art and how do you keep motivated if you get a mental block or the going gets tough?
Stefany - Going to galleries, reading books related to design and seeing something new and fresh really gets me inspired. The person who never made a mistake never made anything, so I believe it is crucial to learn from mistakes and to never give up despite what the challenge may be.
Spy.My - Is your spare time dedicated to honing your artistic talents?
Stefany - I love movies very much, we will at least visit the cinema once a week, in movies I get more inspiration for my art from the storyline, costume, scenery and so on.
Spy.My - What do you do for fun in your spare time apart from art?
Stefany - Most of my spare time is spent in front of the screen either television or laptop. Watching comedy programmes or dramas makes me feel relaxed and helps me unwind from the stresses of modern living.
Spy.My - What is your favourite work of art you have created so far?
Stefany - For me, every artwork created by myself are all my favourite works of art. Ask any artist/designer, we are proud of our great artwork. I did mention that my previous artwork is mostly more to illustration, but to show something different, I'm proud of my satay and string sculpture of a lamp.
Spy.My - What are your artistic goals?
Stefany - To get an opportunity to create my design/artwork on a global basis.
Spy.My - Where is your favourite place on earth?
Stefany - It would have to be Penang, the place where I was born, it has given me a lot of happiness. Penang has a lot of nice and awesome food and places to visit.
Spy.My - What destination would you most like to visit?
Stefany - I don’t have any special destination I would most like to visit because I hope to travel all around the world if I have the chance.
Spy.My - What person from history would you have liked to have met and why?
Stefany - Steve Jobs, he was always an intelligent and innovative thinker. He was great and awesome.
Spy.My - What is your favorite cartoon character?
Stefany - Spongebob Squarepants!! I love it so much. Life is like a sponge, absorbing the knowledge that we want, again at the appropriate time discharging it, only to absorb more and more knowledge of others.
I can see he really put a lot of time and effort to improve himself and become more and more strong. His level now is considered a professional artist but for me he is still willing to learn as much he can and I admire that.
He always put a drawing block and a pencil beside his bed and when he dream something he would draw down what he had dreamt immediately. He used his subconscious imagination to create excellent artwork.
One is a poster design, the title is 'Candle Light of Penang'. The purpose is to introduce people to see how awesome our Penang temples are. As you can see the background has different famous temples from Penang.
Recently I tried my hand at finger art. The title is “One Malaysia”, We are living in Malaysia, we know that we have a lot of races and religions with Malays, Indians, Chinese and many other ethnic groups living together in peace and harmony. It is to encourage that we can't be racist and should just accept the fact we are living together in one country.
First we plan the design until approved by customer, then we first start to draw the outline and then continue to plan the colour from wall to wall. During the process we made some minor adjustments that the customer seemed very happy with so we carried our creative thinking throughout the project.
Spy.My - What is your favorite Movie
Stefany - I love to watch comedy and heroes/action type of movie. Sometimes it gives me a lot of ideas and inspires me.

Whilst frequenting my favourite Penang live music venue I met two young Penang Artists who had been commissioned to paint a mural on the wall of this establishment.
Spy.My - What inspires and gives you hope in the world?
Stefany - Each and every one of us considers one important person that has made a huge impact in our lives.
For me, family is pretty important especially my mother. My mother is the most significant figure in my life because without her I will not live,
my mother has sacrificed her life just to make her children happy. She always eats last during dinner time in order to see her children get
enough food. She puts behind her wants in order to address our needs.
She is great ! Let the people you love and who mean the world to you be your inspiration to persist and persevere. Maybe you need to try a
different angle, work hard or practice more but don’t give up.
Spy.My - As an up and coming Penang artist what do you aspire to be in the art world?
Stefany - I would describe my style as cartoon or illustration art. I still consider myself fairly ‘new’ to the illustration market but I do feel as though I’m becoming more established every day.
