Whereby the Vegetable Soup grabbed my attention for the wrong reasons the Vegetable Tom Yam veritably stole the show with a taste so sublime I wanted to take the whole pot to another table and keep it for myself.
The Kerabu Mango was not something I wanted to order as I do not like the taste and yes it was as sour as ever. However it all got eaten and my friends informed me it was quite a good example of this dish so I bow to their superior knowledge and experience of this taste sensation.

The total cost of this meal at Restoran Seri Idaman was a quite reasonable RM159.00 and that equates to good value for the high quality of the food we were served
My overall opinion was the food served at Restoran Seri Idaman was as delicious as on any of my previous dining experiences at this fine restaurant. The downside was the service needs to be improved. It saddens me that a restaurant serving such fine food can be let down by slack service. I sincerely hope they improve this for my next visit because excellent cuisine like this deserves better support by all staff

The total cost of this meal was a quite reasonable RM159.00 and that equates to good value for the high quality of the food we were served.
My overall opinion was the food served at Restoran Seri Idaman was as delicious as any of my previous dining experiences at this fine restaurant. The downside was the service needs to be improved.
The order the food was served was my only other minor grievance as the staff delivered the rice 5 minutes after sending the fish and prawns to the table.
The observant reader will realise I am yet to comment on the Baked Shellfish (Kerang), well we made the order but unfortunately it didn't arrive.
As I am not really a true aficionado of desserts I left it to my friends to comment on the Fruit Mula Strawberry and their grooming in the upmarket eateries of Queensbay and Gurney Malls' left them feeling it was lacking a lot in comparison to their sweet toothed expectations.
It delivered a sweet and sour taste without generating any heat (lack of chillies) and while the taste was good it definitely did not send me into superlative overdrive.
The Three Flavoured Sea Bass (Ikan Siakap Tiga Rasa) promised a lot because it looked delicious as it was served on a heated fish shaped serving plate amongst a bed of tantalising fruit and vegetables.
The Nam Pritt Giant Prawns were cooked in what I would describe as a tasty oyster sauce with an essence of soy but without any extra spice usually obtained from the cili padi.
After scaling such great gastronomic heights it would take a fantastic effort for the following seafood to supercede the Tom Yam in superlative culinary achievement.
This was one of the best Tom Yams I have ever tasted, the balance between the spices was perfected to such a degree that no spice dominated the taste sensation, it was hot without being overwhelming and I thoroughly enjoyed this sublime soup as it teased and caressed my salivating tastebuds.
Next up was the Tumeric Fried Chicken, although a deviation from our sea food theme it added a nice flavoursome balance to our meal.
Well, no one in our group are vegetarians and it tasted good so it was quickly dispatched, can't waste good food on minor discrepencies can we.
The Vegetable Soup however did grab my attention, but for the wrong reasons. At first taste it was clear it was a very good soup, it tasted good and there were plenty of fresh vegetables to munch on.
The Fried Asparagus was cooked well enough as was the Steamed Rice, but it is difficult for these to warrant further comment than that as they are not the main focus of any meal.
The Deep Fried Mushrooms were a lot drier and less crispy than I am used to, they were also a lot less chewy.
First up were the Deep Fried Mushrooms; I was not expected any culinary high because my previous experience of this dish in most restaurants is it is a plain and bland dish.
This Is What We Ordered:
Even though this is a large restaurant seating many people in an al-fresco environment we arrived early to ensure a nice table with a good sea view to set the tone for a sunset dining experience.
It is particularly pleasing to recommend an eaterie that still delivers fine food on a regular basis so, armed with my trusty camera, a notebook and the deep appreciation of food that I have in common with my friends we arrived in anticipation of what we hoped would be a culinary feast.
I was plotting a seafood feast with four friends and we decided to make an overdue return to Restoran Seri Idaman in Batu Maung on the south eastern coast of Penang.
I have eaten here many times over the years and I cannot remember a bad dining experience in all that time.
That said, it can sometimes be difficult for a restaurateur to maintain high standards due to the high turnover of staff in this industry.
However, these actually gave me a very pleasant surprise as they were very good.
They tasted good as an accompanying dish to everything on offer and I found myself consistently returning to compliment the taste of everything with the mushrooms.
Something was not right here though so I had another spoonful, again the taste was very good but I couldn't help but think that this was a beef soup with the meat taken out and replaced with vegetables.
The caramelised sauce was unpretentious in its approach and it was a great compliment to the main attraction which were the tasty giant prawns.
Everyone seemed content with what they had eaten so we never made too much fuss about it although it did reflect what was not good service from the staff on duty.
It saddens me that a restaurant serving such fine food can be let down by slack service. I sincerely hope they improve this for my next visit because excellent cuisine like this deserves better support by all staff.
