Just inside the entrance is a cemetery plan which lists the prestigious dignitaries that have been interred within this central Georgetown burial ground.
The list of distinguished residents entombed within this graveyard include Captain Francis Light who was the founder of Prince of Wales Island (former name for Penang Island) as well as former Governors of the island, influential officials of The East India Company, the husband of Anna who was Governess for the children of the King Of Siam (you may remember the film).
There are also military personnel, the graves of the Chinese Christians who fled the persecutions of the Taiping rebellion in China, medical professionals, judges and even relatives of the Raffles family of Singapore fame.
Walking through this burial site where the first person interred was in 1789 you get a sense of the history of the island through the interesting epitaphs inscribed on the gravestones, one thing that did stand out was the relatively young age that many of these people had expired.
One rather odd thing was although some of the tombstones had been restored to their former glory, I did notice some peculiar words that looked out of place in the context of a tombstone.
After my visit to the Georgetown Christian Cemetery I can now comprehend why this is a great place of interest to many tourists who visit Penang.
But, after hearing about the list of famous historical characters that were buried in this relatively small Christian Cemetery in Georgetown I decided I would go to check it out.
Does the thought of a tourist visiting a cemetery send a macabre shiver down your spine? I must admit I have never visited a graveyard unless I am going to visit the graves of my dearly departed family.
However...............
This Christian Cemetery gives you a feel of what I would call a stereotypical graveyard, it has many shaded areas courtesy of the wonderful trees that were carefully planted throughout the site and it is obviously well cared for by those responsible for preserving this historic location.
One read that 'deeply deplored by an affectionate family,' I am hoping that something got misunderstood during the restoration and the family were not at war!
It makes you realise your mortality and thankful that medical science and nutrition has advanced so much.
Cemeteries are not normally regarded as part of the tourist trail but the history and famous Penang dignitaries interred here makes this a very interesting location to visit.
