Spy Malaysia Travel Review
The past few occasions I have ventured south to KL and Selangor I noticed the PappaRich restaurants in nearly every shopping mall I entered into.
PappaRichs' first venture into Penang saw them take up some prime shoplots in the popular e-gate part of the island. The corner shoplots offer both indoor and al-fresco dining with views of the Penang Bridge and the Jelutong highway.
After scanning the menu, four dishes were chosen to satisfy our gastronomical desire and first up was the chicken rice with bean sprout.
The bean sprouts were refreshingly crunchy and served with a delightfully minimal sauce that added just a touch of salty flavour without diminishing the natural mellow taste of the bean sprouts, very good, I liked these.
Next up was the Dry Curry Koay Teow With Curry Chicken, this dish was covered with a very tasty chicken curry sauce that looked good but tasted even better.
The gastronomical high took a dip at this point as I tried the Fried Rice with Fried Egg. The fried rice was too flavourless, its look promised little and to be quite frank, delivered less.
Every restaurant can 'on their day', produce tremendous food but the hardest part for restaurants is constantly achieving the high level of consistency that management strive for.
The Pappa Nasi Lemak was a total contrast to the fried rice, it was excellent. The coconut flavour was distinct without being overwhelming and the puffy texture of the rice complimented the taste superbly.
The chicken curry is a tasty addition to this dish and is not dissimilar in quality or taste to the chicken curry served up in Old Town Kopitiam restaurants.
My wife chomped the majority of this dish down and she is a self declared connoisseur of nasi lemak, she constantly berates the lack of culinary guile in many nasi lemak eateries around Penang and if she says this is fantastic nasi lemak then who am I to argue.
For drinks we imbibed a sweet and fruity Pineapple Juice, a Red Bean Cendol that was sweet with a smooth creamy texture helping it to go down very well, Fresh Lemon Honey juice that had a very nice sweet taste without the lemon juice being too overpowering and a hot lemon tea that probably lacks the need for descriptive superlative, it was fine:-)
PappaRich restaurant is a similar theme and price range to the White Coffee brand of kopitiam restaurants, I can understand why this restaurant chain has witnessed success in KL and I see no reason why the Penang branch will not deliver similar success with its Malaysian delights menu.
With any successful franchise, expansion is the name of the game and I was not surprised to hear of a new outlet opening in Straits Quay at Tanjung Tokong, Penang.

After reading some good reports about this chain of kopitiam restaurants I was happy to hear they were opening an outlet in Penang, I thought I have got to sample the culinary wares of this popular franchise serving Malaysian delights.

Don't let that put you off as it is actually quite a nice location and the restaurant has a progressive vibe about the place, a nice ambience.
The steamed chicken melted away from the bone without being over cooked (ok, ok I know, it is very hard to over cook steamed food) and it tasted rather good for steamed chicken but the accompanying chicken stock did little to stimulate my gustatory perception.
I would recommend this dish to any prospective customers, it was a very tasty noodle curry for a mere RM8.90, top marks that chef!
This dish was probably my all round favourite from the four meals ordered, the flat rice noodles were well prepared and served up as a great compliment to the chicken curry.
I find many restaurants can get complacent over basics and fried rice is something everyone in Malaysia grows up with and it can easily be taken for granted during the cooking process.

Sometimes going back to basics in the kitchen produces instant improvement in the levels of food quality served. However, if the fried rice was disappointing the  accompanying spicy sambal sauce was a definite improvement and helped cover the lack of taste in the fried rice.
This rice had been prepared and cooked very very well indeed. The accompanying sambal sauce and fried anchovies were both good without stretching any culinary senses to heights that would demand a more in depth description, it was ok lah.
What will surprise me is if this is the last Pappa Rich outlet to open on the island, I expect more are on the horizon as this is a good Malaysian restaurant brand.
