Sticks Restaurant is located outside the south entrance to Queensbay Mall just where Coffee Bean is situated and I have long thought that Sticks looks a really cool restaurant that I have to visit sometime in the future.
So when at a loose end one Sunday I made my way down to Queensbay to dine at Sticks Restaurant.
Sticks is an Hawaiian themed restaurant and I admit to salivating in anticipation of the meal I was about to order, but then after sitting at my table I waited and I waited and I waited, 15 minutes had passed and still no waiter came to take my order.
After spending a few minutes at the entrance deliberating over what I was going to eat I entered Sticks and slowly walked around deciding which table to sit at. There were only 5 tables with sitting customers so I had a lot of choice but something was niggling at the back of my mind.
I actually contemplating leaving when I noticed a member of staff picking up a menu and slowly ambling around the restaurant in what appeared to be my direction.
Not long after placing my order my starter arrived which was 'Spicy and Sour Pineapple Soup'. It was a clear soup and it came in a fancy bowl. I have to admit I took one taste and my taste buds exploded, this was the best tasting soup I have tried in a long time.
The soup had some vegetables (Sweetcorn and Mushrooms), Bay leafs, Chillies and Pineapples in it to add some substance, but the taste was exactly what I like, spicy, hot and sweet and this definitely improved my mood after what had occurred earlier.
This soup had a strong hint of Lemongrass in every spoonful but it was not overpowering, in fact the mix of Chillies, Pineapples and whatever other ingredients used was top class, I would highly recommend this soup to anyone who likes the hot and sweet taste.
Only one thing I did not like and that was the shape of the fancy soup bowl was not conducive to easily eating all the soup. The bowl was an upside down pyramid shape cut off to leave a square bottom, this results in having 4 angles in the bowl that make it difficult to scoop up the soup with a spoon as the volume reduces through consumption.
Restaurants must remember not everyones taste is the same and it is better to encourage a customer to eat everything than send them home gastronomically frustrated with a desire to eat again.
As you can see from the accompanying photos the Spaghetti comprised a large part of this meal which is a shame because the sauce was very very plain and bland.
This was in contrast to the sweet sauce that was drizzled onto the Chicken and Pineapple Kebab which tasted absolutely fantastic.
I did not eat all of the Spaghetti because of this but after moving the Chicken and Pineapple Kebab around my plate I enthusiastically used all the very tasty rice to soak up what remained of the sauce used on the Kebab, this sauce was delightful but there was not enough of it for my liking.
The vegetables were fine and gobbled up very promptly and the coleslaw looked and tasted homemade which was great, the coleslaw had a taste that was different to the usual coleslaw served in many restaurants in that it was devoid of the despicable (in my mind at least) manufactured Mayonnaise, yep, probably the best coleslaw I tasted in some time.
The Chicken and Pineapple Kebab was also very very good. The contrast of the Grilled Chicken with the Pineapples and the Sweet sauce was delectable.
I washed all this down with a Jasmine Tea from the Premium Tea selection.
The Sticks Fire Bistro environment is an up market Al Fresco design that is very pleasing on the eye and enticing to the cuisine envious passers by who venture into the popular shopping mall called Queensbay in Bayan Lepas.
If you want to have a romantic dinner with your partner each table has a hollowed out coconut with a candle inside which is a nice little touch.
The bill for my meal was a very acceptable RM37.40 that I believe was exceptional value.
Yes I will return to Sticks Fire Restaurant sometime in the future as on the basis of this visit the positives far outweigh the negatives.
For my main meal I chose the 'Aloha Chicken' from the Grill Sets Ala Carte menu, this came with Spaghetti, Rice, Vegetable, Coleslaw, Lettuce, Pickle and Sauce.

When I visit a restaurant and study the menu at the entrance I am usually inundated with eager staff ready to welcome me in and sit me at my chosen table before I walk off to another establishment, this did not happen, undeterred I entered.
I was baffled, there appeared to be plenty of staff around, there were not many customers, so why can no employees of Sticks even come to my table to take my order???
When the waiter approached my table I explained that I was about to leave as I thought the service was far too slow, he apologised in a very polite manner and he explained they had no waiters and everyone was busy.
His demeanour in this situation was acceptable so I decided to stay even though I was not so happy, I thought their food better be good after this!!!
A less fancy curved bowl would be a better choice, if it was not for the fact that this soup was so delicious I would have given up without devouring every last drop.
