The meetings, incentives, conventions, exhibitions (MICE) and business tourism in Sabah is to receive a massive boost with the opening in 2012 of the Sabah International Convention Complex (SICC) in Likas Bay in Kota Kinabalu.
The Kiulu 4M Challenge is where traditional Sabahan skills meets the adrenalin junkies of extreme sports. After the first leg which is running 6 km the competitors then have to go bamboo rafting for 5 km, then paddle-swimming with a bamboo pole for 1.3 km before finally walking on bamboo stilts for 0.2 km.
The Regatta Lepa Water Festival in Semporna is now in its 17th successful year showcasing the distinctive lifestyle of the Bajaus on the east coast of Sabah. A competition is held to crown the most beautiful Lepa (traditional sailboat).
The Monsopiad Cultural Village regularly hold traditional events throughout the year like the Kadazan Wedding Ceremony Display and the Traditional Costumes Exhibition celebrating the Kadazandusun peoples cultural traditions.
This is a colourful event and visitors can also witness a boat tug of war as well as various boat racing making it a great stop off on the route to some of the worlds best dive sites.
2010 also saw the adrenaline pumping Asia Powerboat Championship held in June in Sabah waters for the first time featuring competitors from all over Asia.
While on the subject of competitive races the other notable annual events in Sabah are the Borneo International Marathon and The Borneo International Yachting Challenge.
The annual Sabah Adventure Challenge (SAC) is a team race over 3 days covering 120 km of rugged highland terrain in northern Borneo.
Business events aside, Sabah has a fantastic calendar of interesting events with some that are unique to this part of the world that is host to some 30 groups using more than 50 indigenous languages.
The Sabah International Expo (SIE) is held biennially and is Sabahs premier trade fair having last taken place as recently as October 2010 at the 1Borneo conference hall.
Facilities at SICC will include a five-star hotel, 6,500 sqm exhibition hall, a convention hall seating 6,600 delegates, a ballroom and a 650-seat auditorium.
Sabah events and exhibitions have historically taken place in the larger hotels and resorts until the recent opening of more conference orientated halls at the 1Borneo complex just outside KK and the Star City Conference Event Centre in Kota Kinabalu.

The SAC features trekking and orienteering, mountain biking and traditional water sport to test each team over 3 days racing against the clock.
It is SE Asias oldest established adventure race and is organised on a voluntary basis by a group of dedicated organisers.
If there are no current events when you visit don't worry as there are traditional activities such as the cultural show taking place all day every day.
