Spy Malaysia Travel Review
Imagine that your sense of taste died and woke up in taste bud heaven. Would you be surprised to learn that taste bud heaven actually exists and has been thriving in Shah Alam of all places for the past eleven years?
Maybe a more believable reality would be that I did not realise that my taste buds were even born until I ate at the (now legendary in my mind) 'Restoran Chef Chareon Thai' tucked away on Jalan Sepadu C/25C in the heart of the Shah Alam industrial belt.
This eaterie serves a Thai/Chinese menu and a friend of mine who entertains his clients there advised me to eat here before I venture into the bright lights of any famed Selangor restaurants.

Restoran Chef Chareon, Shah Alam
Our Food Bill

Seafood Tom Yam - RM15.00
Broccoli and Asparagas With Garlic - RM12.00
Lemon Chicken - RM12.00
Venison Green Curry - RM18.00
I could sense the Lime from the hot taste sensation, the honey from the soothing sweet way it caressed my tongue and the lemon was evident without its usual tang of bitterness.
Everything just blended so well and no individual taste was powerful enough to overwhelm the other ingredients as this sublime sauce tantalisingly teased my receptive tastebuds into submission. It was that good!
I thought Butter Prawns with Egg Noodle was a simple dish, you know you just fry them in a butter sauce and serve.
Well that is what happened here too but, the crispy egg noodles and prawns had a very subtle buttery flavour that was as majestic in its taste as it was simple in its execution.
The Venison Green Curry was up next and this was the only dish we ate that featured coconut milk as an ingredient.
This dish was also very good and in another restaurant it would probably receive the glowing report it thoroughly deserved.
However good it was, the bar had been raised to such a height by the other dishes it was difficult for it to compete.
The largest dish of the night was the peculiarly named Sour Sea Bass, I say this was an odd name because the taste was anything but sour, in fact the night hit another gastronomic high with this mouth watering fish dish.
The fish was initially fried then this magical infusion of ingredients and vegetables were added resulting in a gustatory sensation that drove my curiosity into overdrive; Just what was in this sauce?
Again no single ingredient overshadowed any others as I rolled this sauce gently across my tongue. I could sense a combination of yellow ginger and garlic, a mix of sugar and lime together with a touch of mint.
I am sure there were many other ingredients but the chef just smiled as if to say I know something you do not. He is Good with a capital G.
Due to its location the Restoran Chef Chareon Thai is packed at lunch times so you need to get there early to secure a seat or pre-book.
The humble facade of Restoran Chef Chareon Thai lulls you into a false sense of culinary normality until the full gastronomic force of its delightful menu is unleashed on your unsuspecting palate.
I always stated it would take a truly fantastic meal to sweep me away before I would award any restaurant 5 stars. Today this actually happened.
I was smiling from ear to ear the whole way home as this was a Thai/Chinese cuisine experience to savour.
Everything we ate was fantastic and this is what we ordered:
This infusion of spices had just the right amount of heat from the chilli and the mix of spices tasted like it was balanced to perfection over years of dedicated cooking. Round one to the chef with top marks.
Next up was no ordinary Lemon Chicken as the sauce had the taste you would expect from a Mayfair hotel eaterie rather than a back street Shah Alam restaurant.

One of my fellow diners commented that this was the best dish of the night.
It had an essence of Basil leaf that went well with the lean Venison meat and everyone enjoyed this dish.
Evenings are quieter and by the time I arrived at 9.30pm there were not many diners left at the tables.
The Restoran Chef Chareon Thai exceeded my wildest imagination how good it was as it achieved a gastronomic high that no other restaurant had previously reached.
