The online reviews I read about Restoran Kari Kepala Ikan Tiga were quite impressive so I ventured
to the Puchong branch of this chain of seafood restaurants with high expectations of a pelagic
gourmet feast to savour.
Restoran Kari Kepala Ikan Tiga is located on the eastern side of the LDP highway at Jalan BPU 5 Puchong Utama and it is easy to find as it is facing the same highway.
There is a choice of air conditioned dining inside the
restaurant but we chose the al fresco option outside to
enjoy the evening breeze.
The two main dishes we ordered were the Fish Head Curry and the Steamed Fish, the accompanying side dishes were Claypot Tofu and Mixed Vegetables, all served with healthy portions of steamed rice.
The first dish to arrive
was the sizzling hot fish
head curry served in a
claypot and without the
fish head intact.
This kind of surprised me
because I am used to seeing
the head of the fish (Red
Talapia) on the plate,
especially when ordering this
dish in Penang.
The steamed fish we ordered was a Black Jade and the presentation of this dish was a marked improvement on the fish head curry.
I got another surprise when I tasted this dish because it was not what I expected.
The fish came covered in a mixture of garlic, ginger and chillis and best of all I could stare eyeball to eyeball with it as its head was still intact
because I like to become acquainted with my food before I eat it.
The flavour of the steamed fish was also an
improvement on the fish head curry but it still lacked
the heady gastronomic taste of a truly great dish.
The sauce with the steamed fish had a slightly sour
taste that was improved greatly by mixing all the herbs
in with it giving this a satisfactory taste sensation.
The Claypot Curry Tofu was another average dish that registered a satisfying taste without actually captivating the taste buds.
Munching through the mixed vegetables added some
nutritional balance to the meal and it was all washed
down with some very agreeable Chinese tea.
We also ordered a mixture of soft cold drinks and the restaurant gave away a free jelly to each diner which was a nice touch.

There were five people dining at Restoran Kari Kepala Ikan Tiga and the bill came to a less than outrageous RM136 so quite good value
Restoran Kari Kepala Ikan Tiga failed to assail any gastronomic highs as it served up a very ordinary seafood meal that satisfied rather than delighted

The curry was quite creamy and the taste disappointed me because it was too salty and it made me think I've been spoilt with how much better Penang fish head curry is in my opinion.
