Tony Roma's reputation for serving the best beef ribs has been a constant in this restaurant chains impressive growth since the opening of their first outlet in Miami in 1972.
Any self respecting carnivore would drool at the thought of these tender smoky ribs with a delightful array of sauces to garnish and so, with an empty stomach and a yearning for ribs I visited Tony Roma's in Sunway Pyramid to indulge in some serious meat eating.
The Sunway branch is a large sprawling restaurant with a line of tables at the back which over look Sunway Lagoon waterpark.
Dining with my wife we sat down and this is what we ordered (on left):
Fried Mushrooms - RM18.90
Baked Potato Soup - RM5.90
Lamb Ribs Roma Rack - RM49.90
Bountiful Beef Ribs - RM53.90
Cranberry Mojito - RM14.90
Complimentary Bread - RM0.00
10% Service Charge - RM14.95
Tony Roma's has a reputation for serving huge portions so I apprehensively ordered the two starters however, the bowl of baked potato soup was offered at a discount price if ordered with an entree, so my rationale was why not.
The baked potato soup was a really thick soup containing some big chunks of potato, the taste was of creamy potato and this was a hearty opener to prepare for the forthcoming meat feast.
My eyes glazed over when I saw the size of the plate carrying the fried mushrooms because it was so big, I started to get a feeling of maybe my eyes studying the menu was larger that the capacity of my belly.
We both tucked into the fried mushrooms with an aggressive gusto normally associated with the hunger pangs of the starving.
This fried mushroom dish was excellent fayre but the honey mustard dressing was the taste sensation that applied the coup de grāce to any lingering doubts this was just an ordinary appetizer.
The honey mustard dressing was the sensational conduit that transformed this dish into the culinary stratosphere of exceptional gustatory modality.
After polishing off most of the fried mushrooms, the potato soup and the complimentary bread I was fairly full, but with the meat feast to come I was now glad we only ordered the smaller Roma racks of ribs and not the Full Slabs.
When the ribs arrived my hunger returned as it was boosted by the aromatic bouquet of savoury marinated ribs flame grilled and smoked to perfection.
The Bountiful beef ribs was served with baked potato and broccoli and as I cut my knife through the first chunk of beef I could feel the meat just coming away from the bone.
My first taste was without the original dressing I had ordered as I wanted to taste the great meat sensation that Tony Roma's is so famous for.
The flame grilled beef ribs did not disappoint as they were superb, the meat melted in my mouth with an essence of smokiness and without a distinguishable presence of fat.
The next fork was dripping with Tony's original dressing and although this enhanced the smokey taste I still preferred the honey mustard dressing I tried earlier.
My wife is usually very talkative but, it suddenly dawned on me I had been subjected to five minutes of silence, had I done something wrong?
The answer of course was no, she was busy tucking into the best lamb dish she had tried, ever.
I have got to add that she is one of the most critical people I have met with regard to food and cuisine so this was high praise indeed.
Lamb is a wonderfully tasting meat but, one of the biggest issues with lamb served in Malaysia is the high fat content, it can be quite disconcerting.
Maybe we got lucky but, the lamb ribs we were served were virtually fat free, they had the same mouth watering smokey taste and melt in your mouth sensation as the beef ribs and my wife was purring in culinary delight.
Tony Roma's definitely serves the best beef ribs in town and the lamb ribs are just as sensational.
It's not just fantastic tasting ribs that Tony Roma's is famous for as the generous portions they serve are huge and their dressings are simply delightful.
Tony Roma's have been awarded the Global Brand Innovation for successfully introducing the lamb ribs to the menu in Malaysia.
In fact is has been so successful that this dish is being rolled out into the menus of all Tony Roma's restaurants worldwide.
