The Terengganu shopping experience is somewhat different to most other states in Malaysia because of the dearth of large shopping malls that have sprouted everywhere in the urban centres of Malaysias' larger cities.
What Terengganu lacks in concrete and glass it makes up for in the character and charm of the multitude of market places spread over this expansive state.
The Central Market in Kuala Terengganu is a mixture of a wet market selling fresh fish, meat and vegetables and a shopping arcade selling more traditional products and souvenirs like batik, brassware, baskets and songket.
Terengganu is famed for some of the best handmade batik and songket in Malaysia and you will be spoiled for choice on the first floor of the Central Market.
Strolling through the central market taking in the sounds, sights and smells of this wonderful Terengganu shopping experience you cannot help but notice the warm and welcoming smiles from all the stall holders who seem impervious to whether you buy or not, but should the urge to buy get the better of you they welcome some bargaining during the purchase process of any potential sale.
Kuala Terengganu is also home to the department stores 'Giant' and 'Mydin' with Mydin being the largest store in its chain on the east coast and a great place to purchase cheap general goods.
The complex Taman Selera Tanjung is home to the Astaka Shopping Centre in Kuala Terengganu and is a shopping mall in the heart of the city where the locals can purchase pretty much anything they want.
